A lifting machine is defined as a mechanical or manually operated device that, with the help of auxiliary equipment, can lift and move objects from one point to another. This category includes all machines commonly used in daily operations, such as cranes, forklifts, electric hoists, and more.
Machines used in various work processes wear out, change over time, and certain parts may rust, break down, or malfunction, posing significant risks during operation. It is in the best interest of both the employer and the employee to ensure that lifting equipment remains in safe, proper working condition.
The inspection of lifting machines by experts, known as occupational safety inspections, focuses on ensuring the safety and proper functioning of the equipment. Periodic inspections are a fundamental requirement for ensuring healthy and safe working conditions. These inspections are mandated by laws and regulations, making them obligatory for employers. During the inspections, it must be verified whether the lifting machine is operational, functioning as intended, and compliant with safety regulations.
Frequency of Lifting Equipment Inspections
The frequency of lifting equipment inspections is determined by the assigned group number. Upon commissioning, a group number must be defined and recorded in the commissioning report and documentation. If the operational conditions of any equipment change, the group number must be reviewed and modified accordingly. The group number is established based on operational and load intensity levels.
Safety inspections must be conducted at least every five years, or whenever there are significant changes in the environment, in accordance with the inspection group number.
The Three Types of Lifting Equipment Inspections:
-
- Periodic Inspection
- Structural Inspection
- Main Inspection
Main Inspections
The main inspection is one of the most critical and complex tasks when it comes to lifting equipment. It must always be conducted in accordance with standards, covering the entire operation, load capacity, condition, and every component that ensures safe operation. The frequency of these inspections can range from 9, 12, 18, 21, to 24 months, depending on the equipment and its usage.
Structural Inspection
It differs from the main inspection in that a full examination is not required. However, it still involves checking everything that ensures the health and safety of workers and is essential for safe operation. The frequency of this inspection can be every 3, 4, 6, 7, or 8 months.
Periodic Inspection
This is essentially a safety and technical inspection that must be carried out every five years from the time the equipment is put into operation.
However, it is important to note that it is not equivalent to the main or structural inspection. The periodic inspection is conducted simultaneously with the main inspection. After this, the dates for the next main and structural inspections must be redefined.
Documentation
A report must be prepared for each inspection. If the main and structural inspections are conducted simultaneously, the results must be recorded in separate sections within the same report. A report documenting the findings and results must always be created after the inspection of lifting equipment. These written materials and documents must be preserved as an annex to the equipment’s accompanying documentation. Regardless of the type of machinery, it is essential to follow the Occupational Safety and Health Act, which mandates regular inspections and maintenance to protect human life and ensure that all workplace accidents are preventable.
We check whether the lifting equipment can be operated as intended, safely, and whether all standards comply with the operating instructions. We conduct the inspection of lifting equipment based on the relevant 47/1999 GM regulation. We examine structural wear, any other irregularities, and whether the safety devices meet the prescribed requirements, ensuring there are no hazards during use. Entrust these tasks to a qualified professional—don’t take risks. Protect your and your colleagues’ health and physical safety by using well-inspected, reliable equipment and skilled experts.
We conduct our inspections at a high standard, at fair prices, and as on-site evaluations.
